Brook Lopez Snubbed From All-Star Game
It takes a lot to get me upset.
I tend to think that I am a pretty unbiased person when it comes to sports. I picked the Knicks to win the division, and I admit that my favorite hockey team isn't good.
But when it comes to Brook Lopez not being voted into the All-Star Game, I am mad as hell. Kevin Garnett will be starting for the East, and Tyson Chandler will be coming off the bench with Joakim Noah joining him.
All players can be rated on a scale called a player efficiency rating. Of players who have play 10 or more games, the top 5 are LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Brook Lopez, and Carmelo Anthony, in that order. That's right- Brook Lopez has been as efficient a player this season, according to this list, as the NBA's best players. He's also averaging 18.6 points per game, 7.4 rebounds per game, and 2.1 blocks per game. His field goal percentage is 52.1%- all this in only 29.2 minutes played per game, on average. Players stats are also rated on what they would do in 36 minutes. In 36 minutes, he would be averaging 9.1 RPG, 22.8 PPG, and 2.6 BPG. So, this is a player who has had very impressive stats all year.
Kevin Garnett, the starter for the East, has 14 PPG and 7 RPG. Tyson Chandler is averaging 12.2 PPG, 11 RPG, and 1 BPG (a stat line that is inferior to Kris Humphries from last year, where he had 13.8 PPG and 11 RPG and 1.2 BPG). Joakim Noah is averaging 12.9 PPG and 10.9 RPG, with 2.1 BPG. Brook Lopez has better stats than all these players, yet he was not even elected as a reserve. How could the assistant coaches overlook one of the best player in the league this season?
My belief is that they were looking out for ex-head coach Avery Johnson in a sort of retaliatory way to get back at the organization. I think that, if there was no fan vote, that Lopez most likely would have Garnett's place, not as a starter necessarily, but having a spot on this team. For a young player like Lopez, it would do wonders for his confidence, especially since the Dwight Howard rumors have started to come back.
